She started to talk at them, and it became harder and harder for her to be engaged in the world the way she wanted to be. It tries to be a human story about people going through something very difficult and doing their best. LONERGAN: Well, or being too controlling without being in charge, because if you're gonna have a director, you have to let them direct. Although she'd be very happy for me. I mean, nobody knows why anybody's good at anything. I mean, there are some directors, great directors, who aren't particularly oriented towards the acting. I never wanted to be a screenwriter or a director, or I didn't at first. In that case I kind of knew what the main relationship was, what the ending would be, and what the structure of the events was going to be. And that's about it. They're there to support and pay for the film, and they're very anxious about how it's gonna turn out. Which is how it turned out.
